Why do left hand cranks come off?
One of the main things that your bike mechanic will do in a bike service is tighten all your bolts on your bike. And while this sounds unimportant or unnecessary to most, it’s essential. Mechanical ‘wear and tear’ is common because of the moving parts on your bike. And it often comes in the form of bolts working their way out under repeated load. In the case of your crank bolts, and especially your left crank, this is because of the direction of the movement. When pedalling you are effectively loosening the bolt. And if the bolt was not under correct torq for a long time then it can loosen off entirely. A loose bolt will over time wear through the threads and mean that your crank cannot be re-installed. There will simply be no way to secure it back on using the worn out threads. So it becomes new crank arm day!
